The July 4th Fire Island Pines Invasion concluded what was a month long commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, the event that sparked the modern gay rights movement.
The Invasion is a multi-faceted production, this year involving three large passenger ferries, that ferry hundreds of drag queens and queer folk from Cherry Grove, Fire Island to The Fire Island Pines, all at once. As the sailor queens disembark, they’re greeted with a red carpet dock, a concert like atmosphere, and thousands of spectators.
xLab came prepared, bringing two Sony FS7 movie cameras, a run and gun Sony FS5, and a drone to shoot aerial footage in 4K. Our team crammed onto the boats, fried in the sun, and loved every second of it. Thank you to the Fire Island team for your hospitality and collaboration for 2019’s oversized Invasion production and all it’s success.
